02 Online converter

Convert STL to OBJ Online

This free STL to OBJ converter changes a Binary or ASCII STL file into a Wavefront OBJ file directly in your browser. Open a model, preview its geometry, then download an OBJ for a compatible 3D workflow.

The export preserves the original numeric coordinates, scale, and triangle winding. It does not repair the mesh or invent information STL does not contain. Need to inspect a file first? Use the online STL viewer.

03 Simple workflow

How to Convert STL to OBJ Online

  1. 01

    Choose an STL file

Drop a Binary or ASCII STL file into the converter, choose one from your device, or try the sample bracket.

  2. 02

    Preview and convert

Rotate the mesh, review its dimensions and triangle count, then convert it to Wavefront OBJ without changing its coordinates.

  3. 03

    Download verified OBJ

The converter checks the exported triangle count and bounding dimensions before the OBJ download is ready.

04 Conversion example

Verify the Converted Mesh

After conversion, the tool reads its OBJ output and compares the triangle count and bounding dimensions with the STL source. A successful verification means the file kept the same mesh extent; it does not mean the source was repaired or is ready to print.

05 Mesh data

What Is Preserved?

The original coordinate values and triangle order are written into the OBJ. STL has no standard UV, texture, color, or material data to recover, and this converter does not alter normals or attempt mesh repair. For broken surfaces, use STL Repair separately.

06 Format differences

STL vs OBJ: What's the Difference?

Both formats can carry a triangle mesh. OBJ is a flexible text-based exchange format, while STL is commonly used for straightforward 3D-printing geometry.

07 Blender workflow

Convert STL to OBJ for Blender

Convert your STL above, then in Blender choose File → Import → Wavefront (.obj) and choose the OBJ you downloaded. Inspect the scale, orientation, and face normals after import before editing or rendering.

If you only need to edit an STL in Blender, you can usually import the STL directly instead. OBJ is useful when another tool or collaborator specifically expects that format, not as a way to add texture or material information that was absent from the STL.

08 Troubleshooting

Common STL to OBJ Conversion Problems

An OBJ that is larger than its STL source is normal: OBJ is text-based and writes geometry in readable lines. If an imported model looks too large or small, check the destination software's unit interpretation, because neither STL nor OBJ defines a universal physical unit.

Open edges, self-intersections, reversed faces, and other source mesh defects are retained by design. This converter preserves geometry rather than silently changing it. Use STL Repair when you want to assess or conservatively fix a mesh before conversion.

10 Common questions

STL to OBJ FAQ

Is this STL to OBJ converter free?+

Yes. This STL to OBJ converter is free to use, needs no signup, and processes the file locally in your browser.

How do I convert an STL file to OBJ online?+

Choose or drop an STL file, preview its mesh, select Convert to OBJ, then download the finished OBJ file. Nothing is uploaded to a server.

Can I convert binary and ASCII STL to OBJ?+

Yes. The converter reads both Binary STL and ASCII STL files.

Will converting STL to OBJ change the model size?+

The converter preserves the original numeric coordinates, triangle order, and bounding dimensions. STL and OBJ do not store a universal physical unit, so your import software still determines how those coordinates are interpreted.

Can I use the OBJ file in Blender?+

Yes. In Blender, choose File, Import, Wavefront (.obj), then select the downloaded OBJ file. Check scale, orientation, and normals after import. Blender can also import STL directly when OBJ is not required.

Does STL to OBJ preserve color and textures?+

No. Standard STL does not contain UV coordinates, textures, or a portable material system. Conversion preserves the triangle mesh information that exists in the source file.

Why is my OBJ file larger than my STL?+

OBJ is a text format, while many STL files are compact binary files. An OBJ can therefore be larger even when it represents the same mesh.

Can I convert a large STL file to OBJ?+

This first browser-based version accepts STL files up to 50 MB. Larger meshes can require substantially more memory because OBJ is text-based.
