04 How relief works
A 2D image contains colour information but no real 3D depth. That is why this image to STL converter treats every picture as a height map: brightness and shapes are translated into surface height, and the raised surface is extruded onto a solid base.
This is exactly how logos, line art, text plates and lithophanes are produced. If a pixel should stay flat, the threshold control cuts the background down to the base; if it should stand out, it is raised by the relief depth you choose.
05 Relief vs AI
A photo can become a printed relief today, or a reconstructed 3D model once the AI 3D mode ships. They solve different problems.
A photo to STL conversion always starts from brightness, not from real depth. In Relief Mode, bright areas rise and dark areas stay near the base, which is why portraits, landscapes and pet photos translate well into shallow reliefs and lithophanes. For photographs, keep the relief depth low — around 1 to 2 mm — and let contrast do the modelling instead of piling on height.
Object and product photos are a different story. A single photo shows only one side of the object, so relief mode can only produce a raised copy of what the camera saw, not a rotatable 3D model. That is the gap AI 3D reconstruction fills: it infers the complete geometry of the object from the image and rebuilds every side. Relief is the right tool for pictures of flat artwork; AI 3D — coming soon — is the right tool for pictures of things.

Relief mode produces a raised or recessed surface from a 2D image. AI 3D reconstruction goes further: it rebuilds a complete mesh from the object shown in the image, so a chair photo becomes a chair model with depth on every side.
We are working on bringing this AI image to STL workflow to the toolkit, including automatic watertight repair, a flattened base and mesh decimation before export. Until it ships, relief conversion covers logos, drawings, plates and lithophanes entirely in your browser.
07 Printing workflow
Every model you download is a standard binary STL in millimetres with a flat base and a closed surface. Here are direct answers to the questions that matter right after you export an image to STL file.
Yes. The height map forms the top, side walls wrap around the border, and a flat base closes the bottom, so the finished model has no holes or open edges anywhere.
Exactly the width and height you set. STL coordinates carry no units, and this tool interprets them in millimetres, so a 100 × 80 mm model slices at 100 × 80 mm. Change the Width and Height fields before downloading to change the printed size.
Around 2 mm suits most signs and plates. Go up to 3–4 mm for large models that must stay rigid, and down to 1–1.5 mm for lithophanes, where backlight passes through the relief rather than the base.
Yes. The exported STL opens in Cura like any other model. Place the flat base on the build plate and add a brim for thin reliefs that cover a wide area.
Yes. Bambu Studio imports the STL directly and the millimetre dimensions map one-to-one onto the build plate, so no scaling is needed.
Yes. PrusaSlicer accepts the file without conversion. For relief plates, a standard 0.2 mm first layer with supports off is usually enough because the flat base rests on the plate.
